THE PROJECT aimS to design actions and establish a trans-mediterranean Zoonosis Prevention Surveillance Network, a think tank that can provide knowledge, methods and intelligence to prevent the transboundary spread of zoonosis and infectious diseases along the Mediterranean basin and to the North of Europe

Over the past century, climate change, urbanisation, habitat loss, human and animal movements, and the geographic expansion of vectors and reservoirs of pathogens have fuelled a rise in infectious and parasitic disease outbreaks. As a result, zoonotic diseases have surged at unprecedented rates.

We aim to establish a trans-mediterranean zoonosis prevention surveillance network (ZPN) that can provide knowledge, methods and intelligence to prevent the transboundary spread of zoonosis and infectious diseases along the Mediterranean basin and to the North of Europe.

Activities: experts from Lancaster University (UK) and University of Sassari (IT) will be joined by a multidisciplinary team of experts (climate change, ecology, one-health and modelling) and stakeholders (Government of Sardinia, Health and environmental services, Transboundary authorities services) from Europe, Africa, Asia and Americas that will participate in a 4 days of intensive networking, grant and review preparation.

During the event that will took place in Stintino, Sardinia Island, Italy, from 3rd to the 6th of June 2024, in the prestigious Museo della Tonnara. The international network will implement the following tasks:

Epidemiological overview: Define a state of art of zoonosis diffusion in Europe, UK and Mediterranean areas, and describe the most important risk factors, challenges, limitations, and possible routes of entrance of diseases in the various territories. This task will have as output the creation of a multi-author review published in an international journal as deliverable.

Project drafting: Draft a project proposal to be sent to international funding agencies (i.e. European Commission) and that addresses the most important research gaps and needs evidenced during networking activities.
